Apple and tree

June 29, 2011

Isn’t this picture great? Patriotism and apples, and obviously ‘sex sells’ is not a new concept. This is the cover of Johanna Emeney‘s forthcoming collection of poetry, to be published by Cape Catley Ltd. Jo grew up on an orchard, rich fodder for her poems. She is also writing a series of medical poems, one of which was shortlisted for the prestigious Hippocrates Prize for Poetry and Medicine. She has very kindly agreed to let me post one of her beautiful apple poems:

Apple & Tree

We are no more than clones

from stuck scion and stock,

Their fresh wet tongues

first forced to interlock

then heal over

like a plastered limb.

Only a faint knot

betrays the bond:

the scar tissue

of a hard graft,

marrying the best

of shoot and root

to produce good

familiar fruit.
